In Memory of Mary Bauwens Oetzmann

1945 – 2008

Mary worked for 31 years as the Marketing Director for Gierke-Robinson of Davenport, Iowa.  She left us on Sunday, December 14, 2008.  We will always miss her bright smile, her warmth and charm, her infectious enthusiasm, her endearing chuckle, and her wonderful “Can Do!” attitude.

Mary joined the Quad City Chapter of NAWIC in February 1992.  She served on the Chapter 50 board as Director from 1995 to 1997 and then moved into the offices of vice-president, president-elect, and served as Chapter President in 1999-2000 and 2007-2008.  Mary chaired the chapter’s scholarship auction committee in 1995-96 during its early years and also served the chapter as membership chair.  She served as the chapter Block Kids Contest chair for twelve years and as Region 13 chair for one year.  Nothing got her more enthused than working with the Family Museum in Bettendorf to host this annual event.

The NAWIC Quad City Chapter No. 50 will honor Mary’s memory by awarding an annual Family Membership to the Family Museum in Bettendorf, Iowa.  Each year, the proceeds from one or more items at the chapter’s annual Scholarship Auction will be designated for this special award, to be presented at the annual Block Kids Contest.  Additional funds will be applied from donations made in Mary’s name.

Mary strongly believed that mentoring children through the Block Kids competition taught them confidence, self-reliance and the proper outlook toward competition.  She was very vocal at these events with the competitors, letting them know they could achieve more than they even dreamed; but she never failed to let the girls in the competition know that they could excel in any field they chose and could earn a place in the construction industry by hard work and perseverance.  She proudly introduced the female judges that were hand-picked for their accomplishments in their field.
